It’s not uncommon for new situations to take some time to get used to. Whether it’s a pet, a medication, or a pair of dentures, it’s natural to expect an adjustment period. But what happens when your dentures cause sensitivity or sores on your gums? While some initial discomfort is normal, that doesn’t mean you need to suffer in silence. If you’re experiencing pain from your dentures, here are a few ways to get rid of denture sores and live life pain free!
Eliminating Denture Pain
One of the most common reasons people experience denture pain is from getting acclimated to a new pair. This pain will generally subside once your mouth gets used to wearing them, but there are still ways to help make the transition a bit more comfortable, such as:
- Topical anesthetics
- Rinsing your mouth with salty water
- Over the counter pain medication
- Removing and soaking your dentures at night
Other Causes of Denture Pain
While new dentures certainly can cause discomfort, there are other reasons why you could be experiencing pain or sensitivity, especially in older dentures. One possible reason could be that your dentures do not fit properly. If this is the case, it’s time to be evaluated by your dentist. A bad fit isn’t just uncomfortable, it can do real damage to your gums and jawbone, and it can often signify that it’s time for a new pair.
Another frequent cause of sensitivity and sores is improper cleaning. Failure to remove plaque, food debris, and adhesives from your dentures each night can cause painful irritation to the gums, so be sure to brush your dentures daily and soak them in denture cleanser or water when they are not in your mouth. Never sleep with your dentures in. Removing them will allow your gums time to rest and soaking will help keep them moist, which prevents irreparable damage such as cracking or warping.
Remember, some initial discomfort is normal, but once your mouth gets adjusted, your dentures should fit securely and comfortably. If you find that they do not fit or that you are experiencing pain long after your adjustment period, reach out to your dentist for an evaluation.
