Lab technician holding set of dentures Dentures can last for many years with the correct care, like having them relined regularly. Your dentures can lose their snug fit over time, which can cause pain, inflammation, and sores. It can also shorten the lifespan of your new teeth. Your dentist can reline your dentures to ensure a comfortable fit. Here’s what you can expect during the process.

Why Do Dentures Need Relining?

Tooth loss causes your mouth to change shape over time. Your jaw will slowly deteriorate because it’s not being stimulated by tooth roots. As your mouth changes, your dentures won’t fit like they used to. They cannot adapt to the changes, which can lead to pressure sores, jaw pain, and more.

Relining your dentures allows you to maintain a comfortable, secure fit. It prevents slipping and irritation to keep your teeth in place. It will also extend the lifespan of your denture, so you won’t need replacements as often.

The Relining Process

Every situation differs, but the relining process generally takes 30-60 minutes. Your dentist will clean your denture and remove a small amount of material from the area that rests on your gums. They’ll then apply a resin to the underside of your denture and put it back in your mouth. This will create a new impression. As the resin hardens, it will restore a snug, comfortable fit.

Types of Relining

Your dentist may use one of two methods to reline your dentures, which include:

  • Hard Reline: A hard reline may last longer than softer materials, but it may not be as flexible. It may not be recommended for patients with sensitive gums.
  • Soft Reline: A soft resin can provide a more comfortable fit using a pliable silicone material. However, it may need to be replaced more often than with harder materials.

Consider Implant Dentures

If you’re ready to say goodbye to slipping and irritation for good, implant dentures might be right for you. Your dentist can surgically place implant posts into your jaw to serve as new tooth roots. Not only does this provide unmatched stability for your denture, but it also stops bone loss caused by missing teeth. Dental implants are the only method to preserve jaw density to protect your facial structure.

You should not have to worry about your teeth moving around when speaking, eating, or laughing. Whether you choose implant dentures or reline your current set, your dentist can create a personalized plan to achieve your best smile.
