What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneer

Veneers are incredibly thin porcelain shells that are customized to cover up dental flaws by fitting over a patient’s teeth. They are designed to match the color, luster, and contours of the natural smile. They are also durable and stain-resistant so they can work well and look great for up to fifteen years before needing replacement. They can be used to treat one or more dental flaws, including:

  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Chips or cracks
  • Crooked, worn-down, or misshapen teeth
  • Stains that don’t respond to teeth whitening

The Process of Getting Veneers

Lady receives veneers

Veneers generally require two appointments to be placed. The whole process is performed using local anesthetics, rendering it completely painless. During the first visit, you will have a consultation with Dr. O’Connell to discuss your goals before he examines your mouth. Any tooth decay or gum disease will have to be resolved so the veneers can be placed securely. Then, he will remove a tiny amount of enamel from your teeth to make room for the veneers and take bite impressions. He will then place temporary veneers on your teeth before sending you on your way.

The second appointment will happen after your permanent veneers are completed. Our team will remove the temporary veneers and fix the permanent set into place before making any necessary adjustments.

Veneer FAQs

Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?

Unlike orthodontics, veneers don’t change the position of the teeth or jaw. There’s only so much that they can do to treat bite problems as a consequence. However, there are some instances where changing the shape of your teeth will be sufficient to handle your bite issue.

Typically, this is only done for cosmetic bite problems with no real bearing on your underlying health. For example, veneers can help patients with a mild open bite by making the teeth longer and wider, allowing them to meet properly. In more extreme cases it may be necessary to complete orthodontic treatment to fix your bite problems before getting your veneers.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

This depends a lot on the nature of your situation. In some rare cases, patients can get away with covering up a single problematic tooth, or a just few of them that have sustained some damage.

However, the more common application of veneers involves covering all of the visible teeth, allowing them to match each other perfectly. The number of veneers you’ll need to accomplish this can vary from as few as 6 to as many as 12. We’ll be able to tell you more when we meet you in person.

How are Veneers Different Than Crowns?

Veneers and crowns are easily confused; they’re both treatments that involve covering the tooth with a piece of porcelain or ceramic. However, there are substantial differences between these two treatments.

For one, crowns are designed to fit on top of a tooth, covering it from all sides. Veneers, on the other hand, are only meant to overlap the front of the tooth. This makes dental crowns better for restorative care, as they’re going to be able to cover up cavities and damage to the tooth to an extent that veneers will not. However, they also require you to remove a fair amount of your enamel, much more than in the case of veneers. The latter is therefore the more conservative option and is well-suited to patients who have primarily cosmetic issues with their teeth.

Do Veneers Feel Like Real Teeth?

Veneers are typically made from high-quality porcelain, a material that is smooth, beautiful, and has a natural resemblance to enamel. They are also meticulously customized to fit the person that they’re made for. Not only will the veneers be made to suit you, your teeth will also be sculpted in order to ensure that your dental work doesn’t protrude uncomfortably. These factors give well-made veneers incredible realism. When you get your new teeth from us, you can expect them to look and feel just like your natural ones—hopefully even better!
